The T3 Alliance program empowers students to utilize technology in projects that positively impact their communities. During the 2019-2020 earthquake swarm in Puerto Rico, highschool students built a shake alert system by installing a network of Raspberry Shakes around their local school and university.

The CRISiSLab Challenge is a new technology competition concept which aims to motivate students to apply their interests in science and technology in disaster management. Students actively worked with Raspberry Shake sensors to create and demonstrate their own alerting systems and devices.

The ‘Seismology at school in Nepal’ project aims to raise earthquake awareness through educational seismology. The program has installed 30 Raspberry Shake seismographs in rural schools and has worked with them to provide tools and teachings on earthquake education and preparation.

“I use it to monitor earthquake activity on Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). With students, we deployed a few of them in local schools (and we intend to install a few more this summer). The staff at Raspberry Shake is awesome, we received the devices quickly, the instruments are easy to understand and to use ! The installation is fast, the setup of the device as well. There is no issue with the Internet connection. Having the data online really helps sharing science with everyone! I would recommend this for citizen science projects!”

Frequently Asked Questions

If resources are available, one shake per student is ideal. In most other situations, one Raspberry Shake device is perfectly suited to serve up to 30 students. The Shake’s Datacast UDP stream feature is especially useful for allowing multiple students to separately utilize the same live data feed from the seismograph.

Students of all ages can learn from the Raspberry Shake, pre-school up through high-school and even to PhD level research and beyond! Our free instructional materials and lesson plans on edu.raspberryshake.org focus especially on elementary, middle, and high school learning levels.

Raspberry Shakes are simple to use, plug-and-play devices that are easy to get up and running. In school and institutional networks, we recommend checking-in with your system administrators or IT team before set-up in order to ensure smooth access and connectivity to the internet and Raspberry Shake network.

The Raspberry Shake requires a power supply and wired ethernet connection, cables for both are supplied with turnkey models.

Our free mobile app, called ShakeNet, allows anyone to connect to any Shake device on our network, to view and analyze earthquakes and ground motion activity from anywhere. The ShakeNet desktop app gives you access to multiple other web based software:

      • Data View: View live and historic data from any station. Use the advanced filtering and frequency options to better analyze and visualize data.
